A recipe for the best DIY toilet bowl cleaner

There are so many DIY cleaning recipes out there. I am a huge fan of the DIY all-purpose cleaners and I swear by them. Not only do I save a ton of money when I don’t buy the commercial ones but I am also aware of the ingredients. Some commercial cleaners are very harsh and contain ingredients that are toxic. I definitely do not want to use such things so I decided the best option out there is to DIY them and use natural ingredients.

But the all-purpose cleaner is not the only thing I DIY. I have an amazing recipe for a toilet bowl cleaner which you definitely should try out.

It removes stains, bad odors, and even germs. Don’t think that you can pour the mixture in the toilet bowl and it will magically do everything for you. Of course, you still need to use your toilet brush and scrub a little, however, it loosens the stains and makes the cleaning process a lot easier.

What you need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Disinfecting Essential Oil (for example, tea tree oil, lavender oil, etc.)
  • White Vinegar
  • Citric Acid (powdered)

Grab a glass mixing bowl and pour two cups of baking soda in it then add 1/2 cup citric acid.

Then add the essential oil – a couple of drops. Stir well with a wooden spoon after every drop so that you can manage to mix everything.

Pour the mixture in a glass jar.

What about the vinegar?

Yes, vinegar was one of the ingredients, however, you shouldn’t add it straight into the mixture you just made. You need to store it into a separate jar and add it directly to the toilet bowl when it’s time to clean it.

Here are some homemade carpet cleaner recipes

Maintaining your carpet clean can be challenging but what if I told you that I have the perfect recipes for a cleaner that you can make at home using natural ingredients. That’s right – you will save money because we all know how expensive commercial cleaning solutions can get plus you will know for sure that there are no toxic and harsh chemicals in your cleaner. Are you ready?

You need four things

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide

If there is an old stain on your carpet that is annoying you then you want to mix both the white vinegar and the baking soda in order to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the affected area with an old toothbrush or a soft brush. Make sure you let the paste dry completely before you vacuum up the baking soda.

If the stain is really stubborn then you should use hydrogen peroxide. Apply it on the stain and leave it on for a while. Then, of course, make sure you don’t forget to bad the stain with a damp cloth to remove the residue.

Do you have a steam cleaner?

As you know this is a great way to deep clean your carpet. Many cleaning companies like Carpet Cleaning Liverpool apply this cleaning method because it is proven to be very efficient. The steam is able to penetrate deep into the carpet and lift off any impurity that is stuck.

I have a trick for you – fill your clean cleaning machine with warm water and white vinegar.

Clean your bathroom effortlessly: the guide

Cleaning your bathroom can be time-consuming and pretty unpleasant. There are some very useful hacks for cleaning and disinfecting it that won’t waste your time.

– Stop your mirrors from getting foggy

All you need is shaving foam. Apply it to the mirror then remove it with kitchen paper. This hack will stop your mirrors from fogging when you are showering.

– Clean your windows and leave them shiny

Make a mixture of vinegar, water, and rubbing alcohol. You can use this to clean windows, and mirrors while you leave them shiny.

– Clean your toilet

You need two ingredients – baking soda and vinegar. Pour the mixture into the toilet (equal parts of the baking soda and vinegar), and grab the toiler brush to wipe.

– Make your shower head sparkle again

So as time passes by your shower head is going to start getting dirty covered in limescale. You can clean it by removing it and putting it in a bowl that is full of vinegar and baking soda. This will both clean the showerhead as well as leave it sparkling.

– Make your taps sparkle again

Rub the taps with lemon, leave for a couple of minutes, then rinse. Another hack I have is to pour some baking soda on a toothbrush and scrub the taps.

– Clean the bath

Make a mixture of grapefruit and salt, then use it to scrub your bath with it. When done, rinse it with water.

Why are truffles so expensive?

We all know that truffles are expensive. Everything on a menu that includes truffles like pasta is pricey. But why are they so expensive?

Let me start by explaining what truffles are exactly. They are extremely rare and very hard to find fungi. Yes, fungi are kind of like mushrooms but there is a small difference – mushrooms grow outside of the ground and truffles grow underground which makes them very hard to find.

There are different truffle species

  • Winter White
  • Winter black
  • Muscat Black
  • Musky Black
  • Himalayan Black
  • Chinese Black
  • Autumn Black
  • Summer Black
  • White truffles

Of course, there are more but not all of them taste good and some of them don’t have a taste at all.

The reason they are expensive

The first reason why truffles are so expensive is that they can’t be planted or farmed. They are wild and they prefer to grow in places where there’s moisture on warm days and nights that are cool. They also grow on trees like oak, pine, hazel trees.

Some of the most popular places for truffles are the Italian and the French countryside. Of course, some grow in Australia or the Pacific Northwest.

They grow very slow (four to six years for some types) and don’t last long when they are out of the ground.

The hardest step is finding them. The people that are searching for truffles use animals with great senses to help them find them. Some rely on swine which is very risky since the animal might eat the truffle.

Some train dogs as well. Once the ‘‘hunters’’ find the truffle, they carefully dig the truffles up.

So to answer your question on why truffles are so expensive – the whole process of finding them is very hard, long, and they are very rare.

The most expensive truffle is the white one – they are the rarest, have a short season, and they can’t be frozen. They are around $3,600 for a pound.

How to clean and sanitize kitchen tools and utensils

Cleaning and sanitizing your kitchen tools and utensils are quite important for your health. It prevents all the germs and bacteria from spreading – something you don’t want to happen in the environment you cook in. Cleaning and sanitizing are two different things though.

Cleaning removes dirt from your kitchen tools and utensils. It removes the things you can see. Right after you use your kitchen tools you wash them by scraping any food debris. Then using a clean sponge or a brush you scrub each item using dish soap. Then you rinse the detergent and you let them air dry.

Sanitizing is quite different from cleaning. By sanitizing your tools you remove things you can’t see like bacteria and germs. It is known that some germs cause illness like Salmonella, Norovirus and many more so it’s quite healthy to sanitize your kitchen.

Well, quite easy. You spray the surface with a sanitizer of your choice. You leave it on for some time so it can kill the bacteria and germs. Then you allow it to air dry or you clean it with a paper towel.

There are some household products you can use as a sanitizer – chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or white distilled vinegar.

Chlorine Bleach

It’s very effective. You only need a small amount – 1 teaspoon of chlorine bleach to 1 quart of water. Don’t buy a fragranced one. Also, buy what you will use within 3 months, as it breaks down with time.

The water used in the mixture needs to be at room temperature –hot water will make the chlorine dissipate. Leave it on for about a minute. Then allow it to air dry or dry it off with a clean paper towel.

Hydrogen Peroxide/ White Distilled Vinegar

  1. Heat ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide or vinegar to 150° F. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and immediately spray the desired surfaces with it. Leave for 1 minute and wipe with a clean paper towel. This method does a great job at removing Listeria monocytogenes, E-coli and Salmonella.
  2. Use ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide or white distilled vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle. It should be room temperature. Spray the surface you will sanitize and leave it for 10 minutes before wiping it with a clean paper towel. This removes mainly E-coli and Salmonella.

Do not mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar together.

Regardless of how you decide to sanitize your kitchen tools and utensils, you need to clean them first otherwise the sanitization won’t be effective.

How does one take care of knives without a Louis Vuitton case

I saw somewhere that Eric Ripert got himself a custom-made 56k Louis Vuitton case to hold his knives.
All I can say about this is… beautiful. That’s the care and excitement that all chefs should show to their tools. After all a knife is your best friend when it comes to cooking. Especially if the knives are expensive. I am not saying you should spent 56 000 on a case, absolutely not. What I am saying is that
you should take care of your tools, always have them clean and organized.

Do you want to:

• expand the life of your knives
• have them work more efficiently
• keep them as clean at all times
• keep them in the same state as you first got them

If so then follow my tips.

There are some important things you have to do.

  1. Clean your knives after using them. Don’t leave food to sit on
it for a while. Clean them immediately.
  2. Dry your knife. Right after cleaning it dry it with a towel.
Don’t let them air dry since that can cause rust.
  3. Cut on wooden or composition cutting board. If you cut on
glass, metal, marble or similar surfaces you will eventually
    damage the blade.
  4. Never wash your knives in your dishwasher. This is probably
one of the worst things you could do to your knife. After
excessive washing in the dishwasher they will start chipping.

So if not in the dishwasher how am I supposed to wash my knives?

Isn’t this the most effective way to clean them?

You have to wash them by hand if you want them to last longer.

  1. Soak them for a bit in warm soapy water.
  2. Rinse the knife removing the soap residue
  3. Dry the knife. As I mentioned above you should never leave your knives wet.
  4. Store your knife in one of the following
    • On a magnetic rail or block
    • In a traditional knife block
    • In the box the knife was bought in

Keeping your garbage disposal fresh and clean

garbage disposalA garbage disposal is an amazing convenience in a kitchen, but nobody likes to discuss or clean it. A garbage disposal should be cleaned every month in order to maximize its lifespan and prevent bad odour that can spread through entire house. We all probably procrastinate and postpone cleaning of the appliance or we simply don’t have time for that. However, in order to get rid of the terrible smell caused by food crumps, sludge and various bacteria, we have to clean it regularly. Here are steps on how to do it efficiently and quickly.

Get rid of large scraps and bad odour

As far as the first step goes, before you do any cleaning, make sure you turn off the appliance. After this step, you want to continue by removing any blockage and food fragments by reaching into the disposal with a kitchen pliers or similar tool. Be careful when cleaning around the blades so that you do not damage or break them. After that, you want to focus on cleaning the blades or grinders. Put some ice into garbage disposal, and a cup of salt and vinegar. After you run the cold water, turn on the appliance and let the disposal work for few seconds. The ice will help you clean those food particles and any other blockage and sharpen the blades, while the vinegar and salt will neutralise the smell.

Empty the drain pipe

The next step includes cleaning the appliance’s drainage system by rinsing down any scraps. What you need to do next is plug a drain with a stopper and fill the sink with water. You can add some dish detergent for better results. Then, let the water drain with garbage disposal running at the same time. Weight and gravity of water will rinse down any remains that are stuck in the pipe.

What about the smell?

If your garbage disposal still has a bad smell, there is a great solution that will make it fresh for a long time. Take a lemon or an orange and cut it in 4 pieces. After you place in them in the sink, run cold water and turn on the appliance. Citrus acids will neutralize the smell and will keep it fresh for some time. Additionally, you can use baking soda and vinegar to achieve great results. Pour the mixture into drain and wait for 10 minutes. Flash with boiling water while the garbage disposal is running.

Take care of the garbage disposal

In order to expand its lifespan, take care of your garbage disposal. Remember that you can put only biodegradable food into the appliance. It is not a trash bin and you need to avoid putting things that will damage or break it, such as potato peels, onion skins, celery stalks, or stuff that expand from the water (rice). On the other hand, items you can grain up and which will actually clean the garbage disposal are small fish or chicken bones, egg shells, etc.
